America's Problem: Representation Without Taxation

America's Problem: Representation Without Taxation

By    |   Monday, 23 May 2016 09:13 AM

In America, more than 230 million citizens are eligible to vote while about 140 million pay income taxes. This is most likely the reason we face the problems we do.

If taxpayers were responsible for budgeting, the safety net might be what Franklin Delano Roosevelt envisioned, providing a hand up rather than a hand out.

Imagine a modern Democrat making a statement like that instead of hearing Hillary Clinton claim, “Republicans aren't just missing the boat on early childhood education – they're trying to sink it” because they refuse to write blank checks for programs that have made no difference in educational accomplishments according to studies and data.

The solution is simple – all citizens should pay income taxes or provide a service to their community in exchange for a hand up whenever possible. This might make elections about issues like monetary policy as it was in 1896 instead of free college, free healthcare and free daycare.

It’s not legal to force voters to pay a tax but there should be a sense of civic responsibility in voting.

As it is now, civic responsibility is not a requirement and in fact, civic responsibility is in many ways is discouraged by some leaders in the Democratic party.

A rush to register voters based on promised benefits is an example of how far we have moved from John F. Kennedy’s charge to his fellow Americans, “ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.”

Until most Americans place country ahead of free stuff from government, the economy will struggle and the middle class will continue shrinking.
