US Would Be Greece if Occupy Wall Street Won

By    |   Friday, 03 July 2015 12:40 PM

It was less than four years ago when the sounds of drum circles and smells of tent encampments made millions of hard-working Americans avoid downtown areas in their cities.

Occupy Wall Street has taken over downtowns for organized protests all around the country.

Although their platform was never really clear, protestors seemed to want to be allowed to do whatever they wanted to do.

For example, an individual with a master’s degree in puppetry wanted his six-figure student loan forgiven and a high-paying job in puppetry that included free health care.

Protestors wanted the government to pay for their demand and simplistically believed the government would get the money by taxing the rich. As we now know, this elegant solution doesn’t work in the real world.

Greece offered individuals a chance to do what they want. In Greece it was possible to retire before the age of 50 even if you worked less than full time.

Generous benefits were theoretically funded by high tax rates but somehow the rich managed to avoid paying taxes and the government was unable to fund its promises. The end result is on full display as millions of Greek citizens are suffering.

Greece provides a reality check on Occupy Wall Street’s dreams. There is no free lunch and there can’t be because someone has to work to pay for the lunch. Taxes can only punish success so much before the successful take steps to keep some of their wealth.

To avoid becoming Greece, Americans need to remember hard work and savings have always been the key to the American Dream.

Yes, someone will always have more than the average person but the average American is far better off than the average citizen in any other country.
