China: Where the Jobs Are…for Americans

Advice to the graduate: Looking for work? Try China.

With unemployment approaching 10 percent in the United States, recent college graduates are increasingly looking for and finding jobs in Beijing, Shanghai, and elsewhere in China, according to a report in The New York Times.

China's economy is booming, the cost of living is cheaper than the United States, the jobs are abundant, and you don't need to know the language to get hired.

"I've seen a surge of young people coming to work in China over the last few years," Jack Perkowski, who founded Asimco Technologies, among the biggest automotive parts firms in China, told the Times.

"When I came over to China in 1994, that was the first wave of Americans coming to China. These young people are part of this big second wave," said Perkowski.

Joshua Arjuna Stephens, for example, a 2007 Wesleyan University graduate, took a temporary summer job in China two years ago that led to a position as a manager with a Beijing social media company.

"People thought I was nuts to go not speaking the language," said Stephens. He is now "highly proficient" in Mandarin, the Times reported.

Stephens' Chinese success story has been repeated many times as American job seekers come to the country in increasing numbers.

Despite good job prospects for U.S. college grads, unemployment in China has become a "very serious" problem, reported The Wall Street Journal. Many who have lost jobs recently have become street peddlers, said the Journal.
