Morningstar, the mutual-fund rating service that classifies performance on a scale of one to five stars, released its quarterly list of 10 stock picks for the third quarter.

“While the story of 2017’s second quarter was active management's retreat to lesser-known names in the face of stretched valuations for more recognized names, the story of the third quarter was our top managers' return to well-known, blue-chip names,” Morningstar said. “That said, many quarterly commentaries continued to highlight the issue of valuations after a nine-year bull market.”

As the S&P 500 stock index breaks records with each passing week, investors are worried about stretched valuations and the over-reliance on a handful of stocks like Amazon.com, Apple, Google, Facebook and Netflix.

“As was the case during prior periods, most of the high-conviction buying was focused on high-quality names with defendable economic moats, exemplified by the greater number of wide- and narrow-moat names in our list of top 10 high-conviction purchases (as well as among the top 25 high-conviction purchases),” Morningstar said. “There were less no-moat names on our top high-conviction purchases list this period compared with last period.”
