WSJ: Small Businesses Unable to Find Skilled Workers to Fill Job Openings

By    |   Thursday, 10 July 2014 01:37 PM

While many economists have expressed enthusiasm about recent payroll gains, many small-business owners see it differently.

They are having trouble finding skilled workers to fill job openings and say the situation is hampering their ability to grow, The Wall Street Journal reported.

In a survey of 848 small-business owners and CEOs conducted by The Journal and Vistage International, 33 percent said they had unfilled job openings in June because they couldn't find qualified applicants. That's up from 31 percent two years ago.

Ironically, the job market's strength is a large part of the problem, economists told The Journal. With the unemployment rate down to an almost-six-year low of 6.1 percent in June, there are less skilled workers to go around.

In the survey, 43 percent of small-business owners said job vacancies are limiting their companies' growth, up from 39 percent in 2012.

Melanie Gass, owner of CenterPoint Solution, a technology services firm in New York, told The Journal, "We're stunting our growth right now because there's a limit to the number of projects we can handle at one time," thanks to a labor shortage.

Meanwhile, the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB)'s Small Business Optimism Index fell 1.6 points to 95 in June. The drop stemmed in part from a falling number of businesses that expect the economy to improve.

"Consumer and business owner optimism remain low, with both spending growth and sales expectations weak," NFIB chief economist Bill Dunkelberg said in a statement.
