Romney Defends Business Record in Face of Attacks

ROCHESTER, N.H. (AP) — Presidential candidate Mitt Romney is offering a defense of his time working in finance as his rivals attack his business record.

At a rally in Rochester Sunday, Romney told the crowd he once stocked shelves at Staples, the successful office supply company that his venture capital firm invested in. Rival Newt Gingrich attacked Romney's record at Bain Capital, the venture capital firm he led, during debates over the weekend.

Gingrich slammed Romney at a debate on Sunday morning and intensified his language as the day wore along.

“Those of us who believe in free markets and those of us who believe that in fact the whole goal of investment is entrepreneurship and job creation,” Gingrich said, “we find it pretty hard to justify rich people figuring out clever legal ways to loot a company, leaving behind 1,700 families without a job.”

Gingrich called the accusations against Romney a “legitimate part of politics,” so long as they were accurate, the New York Times reported. He said he did not take issue with a “super PAC” supporting his candidacy that unearthed a film documenting one of the failing companies that cast Romney in a poor light.

“To quote the governor, you have to have broad shoulders and you have to be able to take the heat to be in the kitchen,” Mr. Gingrich said with a smile, speaking to reporters at a news conference here. “Those were his direct words.”

Romney also said Sunday he knows what it's like worry about losing a job. He told the crowd he understands more about working in the real economy because there were "a couple of times" when he was worried he was going to "get pink-slipped."

Romney was also holding a rally in Exeter, N.H., on Sunday night.
