Mich. Democrats Might Seek $10 Minimum Wage

Wednesday, 22 July 2009 10:48 AM EDT

The Michigan Democratic Party is considering asking voters to raise the state's minimum wage to $10 an hour.

The minimum wage currently is $7.40 an hour.

The potential 2010 ballot initiative was among a few discussed Wednesday by party chairman Mark Brewer.

The Democratic Party also is researching ballot proposals to reduce utility bills, require employers to provide health care and impose a one-year moratorium on home foreclosures.

The Democratic Party was behind a controversial ballot proposal in 2008 that would have changed several aspects of the state constitution including the structure of state courts and how the boundaries of lawmakers' districts are drawn.

Courts ruled the proposal was unconstitutional, and it never made the ballot.
