Americans do not think President-elect Donald Trump will improve race relations, improve the quality of the environment, and keep the nation out of war, but he will reduce unemployment, improve the economy, and control illegal immigration, according to a Gallup Poll released Monday.

Trump, the Republican nominee who won the 2016 election in surprising fashion, has started appointing advisers and narrowing down picks for his cabinet. He ran his campaign on the premise he would lower taxes, curb illegal immigration, eliminate ISIS, repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act, and create jobs in America.

He scored positive on those fronts, but below 50 percent on the following: increasing respect for the United States, substantially reduce the federal budget deficit, reduce the crime rate, and heal political divisions in this country.

Poll results were based on telephone interviews with 1,000 people with a +/- 4 percent margin of error. Most polled also were positive he would improve education, appoint good justices to the U.S. Supreme Court, and keep the U.S. safe from terrorism.

Americans, when asked in 2008 and 2012, thought President Obama had a better chance of improving the healthcare system and keeping the U.S. safe from terrorism.
