Gallup Poll: Job Creation Fell in September

Wednesday, 05 Oct 2011 01:24 PM

Job creation fell for the third consecutive month in September, continuing a reversal of labor gains made steadily since early 2010,
the Gallup polling firm reports.

Gallup's national Job Creation Index score slid to plus-12 in September, which, although in decline, is still up from plus-9 a year ago.

"Gallup's September Job Creation Index score of plus-12 reflects the 31 percent of employed Americans nationwide who say their employer is hiring new workers and expanding the size of its workforce minus the 19 percent who say their employer is letting workers go and reducing the size of its work force," Gallup says.

"Hiring has exceeded firing every month since February 2010, reflecting significant improvement compared with late 2008 through the start of 2010, when job contraction exceeded or rivaled job creation. Still, the nation's current Job Creation Index score is again less than half of what it was (plus-26) when Gallup began tracking job creation daily in January 2008."

Some heavyweight economists say recession is growing more likely for western economies, including Stephen Roach, non-executive chairman of Morgan Stanley Asia.

"To me, the major economies of the developed world are right on the brink of a recession and are likely to tumble into a recession over the course of the next 12 months," Roach says, according to Reuters.

Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke has said the economy is faltering and adds that high unemployment is dampening consumer confidence.

"We need to make sure that the recovery continues and doesn't drop back and that the unemployment rate continues to fall downward," Bernanke told Congress recently, the Associated Press reports.
