President Donald Trump wants confidante Larry Kudlow to be considered for Gary Cohn's role as chief economic policymaker, The Washington Post reports.

Reuters quoted an administration official as saying Kudlow and White House adviser Peter Navarro are the "top two candidates" to replace Cohn.

Cohn resigned Tuesday after lobbying against Trump's steep proposed tariffs on steel and aluminum.

Kudlow, a senior contributor at CNBC and economics editor of the National Review, previously urged Cohn not to quit over the tiff with Trump.

"Personally, I have urged Gary Cohn to stay," Kudlow told CNBC. "I spoke to him this week and I said, 'Please stay.'

"[Cohn] and [Treasury Secretary Steven] Mnuchin are the twin pillars of economic growth in this administration," he added.

Trump will not have an approving ear in Kudlow, either, when it comes to the tariffs. Last week, Kudlow told CNBC the president's tariffs would damage the economy to some extent, and, to some extent NAFTA if the talks break down.

"We're already hanging by a toenail on NAFTA," he warned. "If we have to walk out of NAFTA or those negotiations totally break down, then this steel thing turns from a minor irritant to a major calamity for our economy and our stock market. Make no doubt about that."

Trump tweeted Monday evening he'll be making a decision "soon."
