Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., has targeted Walmart with a bill aimed at making the company raise its minimum wage, CNBC reports.

Sanders introduced the Stop Welfare for Any Large Monopoly Amassing Revenue from Taxpayers Act, or Stop WALMART Act, on Thursday, the same day that Walmart announced its quarterly earnings and its forecast for the rest of the year.

"The Walton family, the owners of Walmart, are the wealthiest family in America with a net worth of about $180 billion. Meanwhile, most Walmart retail workers are working for horrendously low wages with minimal benefits," the senator told CNBC in a statement. "The wealthiest family in America must pay its workers a living wage."

He added that “Amazon did the right thing by raising their minimum wage to $15 an hour,” according to The Washington Post. “Walmart can and must do the same.”

Co-sponsoring the bill is Rep. Ro Khanna, D-Calif., who wrote on Twitter: “It’s time to put workers over wealthy corporations – across our nation, one company at a time. Today, I’m proud to join my friend, @SenSanders, in introducing the Stop WALMART Act to raise wages for Walmart workers.”

Walmart spokesperson Kory Lundberg told the Post the “big focus for our company is making it easy for people to get in the front door for a job and empowering them to grow as fast as their skill will take them. We have been very deliberate about our job offerings, and we will continue listening to our people and investing in the training, benefits and wages that they tell us are important.”
