Lack of a US Energy Strategy Is a Big Drain on Us All

By    |   Thursday, 22 March 2012 10:16 AM EDT

The United States doesn’t have an energy plan.

Right now, we can all use some cheap energy. Oil is more than $100 a barrel. Gasoline is pushing toward $4 a gallon in most states. Where I live in the Bahamas, it is near $6 a gallon.

One thing that continues to shock me about the United States is that politicians on both end of the aisle continue to be bought off by the oil lobby.

The country doesn't have an energy plan.

T. Boone Pickens has offered a common-sense way to get off foreign oil.

The Pickens plan in a nutshell is to convert many gasoline engines to natural gas and natural gas plants will supply gas to cars. Meanwhile, you set up windmills all throughout the Midwest and supply energy that way. With natural gas at below $3, this would supply a cheap fuel for automobiles.

Another way to get off oil is with other forms of energy. Drill more, solar, geothermal etc… Many alternatives are still expensive but their prices are coming down. For example, in the past eight years, solar panels have gone down about 75 percent in price.

I personally don’t care where the panels come from: China, India, Japan or the United States. I want the cheapest and best panel. However, the United States’ recent tariff hike on imported solar panels from China shows that U.S. officials don’t care about cheap energy or the American consumer but rather protecting their own interests in a protectionist manor.

In the 1970s after experiencing the massive energy crisis, Brazil decided to get off oil. Brazil produces nearly half its fuels in the form of sugar-based ethanol.

The United States needs to stop listening to lobbyists: The solar lobby, which wants tariffs on foreign panels. The oil lobby, which continues to discourage other forms of energy.

The United States must become more determined to getting off foreign oil and moving toward energy independence.

And just as a side note, I have no real bias here. I own all sorts of companies. I own solar stocks, oil stocks and natural gas stocks, as I feel all are realistic alternatives.

I just wish the U.S. government and its people would feel the same way.
