Trump to Lawmakers: Back off Wal-Mart

Congressmen who sent a letter to Wal-Mart raising concerns over possible money-laundering issues in Mexico should let Mexican authorities deal with the issue, said billionaire real-estate mogul Donald Trump.

Congressmen Henry Waxman and Elijah Cummings wrote a letter to Wal-Mart Wal-Mart's CEO Mike Duke recently raising concerns over possible money laundering and tax-evasion issues at the company's Mexican subsidiary Wal-Mart de Mexico.

"I think it's outrageous. These are people doing business in Mexico, so let Mexico protect Mexico, what are we doing protecting Mexico. Wal-Mart is an amazing company," Trump said.

"It's time we protect ourselves and we don't destroy our own companies," Trump added.

"The United States has enough problems, and in the meantime they're trying to take down great companies like Wal-Mart and destroy them for what reason?"

Maryland Representative Elijah Cummings and California Representative Henry Waxman, both Democrats, wrote in the letter to Duke demanding documents as part of a probe into Wal-Mart's activities in five nations besides Mexico “where risk was greatest,” according to Bloomberg.

Wal-Mart officials, who have faced accusations of bribery in Mexico in the past, say they are already working with Congress on the issue.

“We want to provide members of Congress with whatever appropriate information we can to help them understand our efforts to address compliance issues," said Brooke Buchanan, a Wal-Mart spokeswoman, according to The Wall Street Journal.

"We have already provided committee staff with two briefings, and we are exploring ways to make additional information available. We are committed to doing whatever we can to appropriately address their requests, consistent with the ongoing federal investigation.”
