Emergent BioSolutions Inc., a biotechnology company that makes an antidote for anthrax, is cutting 24 percent of its work force in Lansing, Michigan.

The vaccine maker is firing 62 employees while another 28 left voluntarily after accepting a severance package, broadcaster WLNS News 6 reported on its website. The Food and Drug Administration in August approved the opening of a newly built $108 million factory in Lansing that operates with a leaner staff.

“They’re all really good people, they’re hard workers and this isn’t easy for any of us, I mean there’s no doubt about it,” Mike Alley, director of public relations at Emergent BioSolutions, told the news station. “It’s a state of the industry building and the bottom line is, that we have people here where we don’t have work for them to do.”

Emergent BioSolutions five years ago was awarded a five-year, $1.25 billion contract to provide the federal government with 44.8 million doses of its anthrax vaccine, according to the Baltimore Sun.

Emergent BioSolutions, based in Gaithersburg, Maryland, had a market value of $1.3 billion as of Oct. 5. Its stock has declined 19 percent since the beginning of the year.
