Side Effects of Xanax

Friday, 14 January 2011 10:03 AM EST

Xanax, Xanax XR, Alprazolam (generic), and Niravam are used to treat panic and anxiety disorders. This is a time-released oral medication that should not be crushed or chewed as it can result in a higher risk of side effects. Most people tolerate this medication well without an adverse experience, while some may exhibit mild to severe side effects or allergic reactions.

Common Side Effects of Xanax include:
  • Joint pain
  • Decrease in appetite
  • Drowsiness
  • Headaches
  • Dizziness
  • Fatigue or tiredness
  • Decreased libido or sexual interest
  • Constipation
  • Nausea
  • Clumsiness
  • Sedation, especially with the first dose
Symptoms That May Require Medical Attention:
  • Memory problems
  • Difficulty with speaking or slurred speech
  • Mental or mood changes
  • Severe confusion
  • Rage or hostility
  • Restlessness, mania, or hyperactivity
  • Tremors (twitching)
  • Aggressive behavior
  • Allergic reactions such as rash, swelling (especially in the face, throat or tongue), extreme dizziness, difficulty breathing
Rare and Infrequent Side Effects:
  • Jaundice
  • Suicidal thoughts or actions
  • Hallucinations
  • Dry mouth
You should report any symptoms you experience to your doctor when taking Xanax, but especially those that present as extreme mental changes, thoughts of suicide, allergic reactions, or other unusual behavior. Not everyone experiences adverse physical or mental problems when taking this anti-anxiety medication, but it is wise to know about them. You should not drive a vehicle or use heavy machinery until you are sure of how it will affect you since it tends to act as a sedative.

Xanax may also create long term use side effects including dependency (rare), the possibility of brain damage (no conclusive evidence at this time), or trouble with memory which can also be associated with panic or anxiety disorders. Long term side effects are not a big concern. This information is purely for making those who use it aware of the possibilities. If dependency occurs there will be signs of abuse like those you would see with any other kind of drug addiction.

You should also be aware of any drug interactions that may affect your ability to take this BDZ medication. These include, but are not limited to, certain anti-fungals, anti-seizure medications, anti-depressants, antibiotics, and some herbal and non-prescription medications. For a full list of drug interactions, ask your pharmacist.

Xanax can also cause withdrawal side effects if you are taken off this drug suddenly. If you experience any kind of symptoms that are out of the ordinary for you it is important to speak with your doctor.
