Wisconsin has always been a staunch supporter of the right to bear arms for its citizens. Consequently, the state offers some of the most lenient gun laws in the country, and those extend to visitors in the state.

Wisconsin residents face few restrictions when it comes to the purchase, ownership and carrying of firearms. No permit or license is required for handguns, rifles, or shotguns; however, there is a 48-hour waiting period on the permit for a handgun.

Wisconsin residents with permits can legally take their weapons into 23 states. Conversely, visitors from the following states are legally permitted to carry firearms in Wisconsin: Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia (non-resident permits), Washington, West Virginia (only if permit issued after 6/8/12), and Wyoming, according to the NRA-ILA.

It’s important to familiarize yourself with Wisconsin gun laws before traveling with your weapon.

Despite the open carry allowances, concealed weapons are prohibited from being transported inside vehicles. Travelers are required to keep loaded or unloaded handguns in an inaccessible area of the car.

Visitors don't need a permit to open carry in Wisconsin, according to The Shooter's Log.
