Wellbutrin is a prescription antidepressant drug used for clinical depression. It is also known by other names including Bupropion, Zyban, Aplenzin, Budeprion, and Voxra. Normally, it causes the release of dopamine or norepinephrine which is supposed to decrease depression symptoms.
While most people are able to take this antidepressant without experiencing any problems, there are some people that experience various side effects. Most of these side effects are not severe and can easily be remedied by your doctor. However, there is still the possibility of allergic reaction and rare conditions that can occur from taking this medication.
Common Wellbutrin Side Effects include:
- Weight loss
- Agitation
- Constipation
- Dry mouth
- Excessive sweating
- Nausea and/or vomiting
- Headaches
- Dizzy spells
- Loss of appetite
- Insomnia
- Tremors (shaky or jittery)
- Hostility
- Blurred vision
- Rapid heart rate
- Irregular heart beat or palpitations
- Confusion
- Altered hearing
- Anxiety
- Indigestion
- Hypotension (low blood pressure)
- Changes in taste
- Impotence
- Menstrual changes
- Arthritis
- Decreased libido
- Fainting
- Hypertension (high blood pressure)
- Increase in appetite
While these are common side effects that can occur from taking this medication, not all people experience them.
Uncommon Wellbutrin Side Effects:
- Panic attacks or severe anxiety
- Seizures
- The feeling you cannot sit still
- Aggressive behavior or hostility
- Suicidal behavior or thoughts
- Manic depressive behavior (extreme happiness/excitement switching to extreme sadness)
- Hallucinations
- Severe insomnia
- Frequent heart palpitations
- Unusual behavioral changes such as engaging in hazardous activities
- Extreme internal restlessness or feeling extremely jittery
- Allergic reactions such as hives, itching, rash, swelling, difficulty swallowing or breathing, and swelling
These are not common side effects of using this antidepressant, but they need to be reported as soon as you experience any of them.
Rare side effects include:
- Changes in blood sugar levels (high or low)
- Bronchitis
- Acne
- Mood swings
- Bladder infection(s)
- Ulcers
- Flushing, primarily of the face
- Loss of memory
- Canker sores
These rare symptoms that have been reported have yet to be confirmed as being caused by this antidepressant.
There are also withdrawal side effects that can be experienced when this medication is stopped. These include:
- Headaches
- Irritability
- Anxiety
- Dizziness
- Agitation
- Fatigue
- Tingling or burning sensations
- Confusion
These symptoms are not experienced by all people that have used and stopped taking this medication. In most cases, these symptoms have subsided over time without the need to address further treatment options.
