Wednesday, 22 December 2010 12:54 PM

The State of Washington funds many scholarships and grants, especially for students belonging to less affluent families. Of the many sponsorships offered, here are the five best scholarships for Washington residents:
1.The Washington State Need Grant: Introduced in 1969, this is the first scholarship program initiated by the state to aid students belonging to the lowest income strata. To qualify for the grant from this fund, a student must belong to a needy category. The cost of attending college, tuition fees, books, and livelihood expenses are covered by this grant. The aid is provided to undergraduates as well as those pursuing vocational courses.

2.Washington Scholars Program: This fund is designed to aid students who have already been enrolled at any Washington college or university, public or private. The top one percent of the school’s graduating senior class is nominated for the grant. Priority is given to students with outstanding leadership qualities and academic excellence. Three high school seniors from each of the state’s 49 legislative districts are benefited by this program.

3. Washington Promise Scholarship: This grant program was started in 1999 with the aim of providing college education to meritorious students belonging to lower income groups. The scholarship can be availed by students for both public and private colleges as well as the universities in Washington. To qualify for this grant, academic merit is the key criterion. Recipients are reimbursed college expenses for four years.

4. Corporate Scholarship: Large corporations in the U.S. facilitate higher education for the student community by sponsoring funds. Though the criterion for selection of beneficiaries is need based, academic excellence is also taken into account for the selection procedure. The Tylenol Scholarship is one such corporate scholarship, catering mainly to students pursuing a career in medicine or in the health care industry.

5. The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Graduate Scholarship: This is one of the largest private scholarship funds in Washington. It is designed to help students for two years and community college transfer. This grant covers the living expenses of the students, college tuition, and the cost of books. To be eligible for the program, students need to be nominated by the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation faculty. A review panel selects students based on their academic excellence as well as fiscal needs.
Apart from these key scholarships, there are many other grants and aid that have made the pursuit of higher education possible for students.
