What Can My New Camera Do?

Monday, 03 January 2011 03:02 PM EST

So you want to capture that beautiful sunset, mesmerizing landscape, an ancient monument, a party with friends, or your kids having fun in the bath tub, with your newly purchased camera. Have a nice time, but just keep in mind that before you actually start shooting, make yourself well versed with the functions of your camera. Knowing its settings will help you capture the moment as close to reality as possible.

If you have got yourself a digital SLR camera, then the possibilities are infinite. The choice of using a wide variety of lenses ensures that no view, no distance, and no area ever get missed out. The focusing is sharp and fast, and bigger and better built sensors with much less noise at higher ISO ensure that the picture quality is excellent. Also, you don’t have to worry about the size at which you will print the pictures, as the quality will be retained even in poster size.

If, however, you are planning to buy one, then check out some top-rated ones among Canon’s digital cameras like Canon EOS Rebel T2i with 18-55mm Lens, 18.0 megapixel CMOS Image Sensor, and increased light sensitivity for low-light photography. An advanced HD Movie mode that captures up to 3.7 frames per second is an added advantage.

Among the Olympus digital cameras, you can check out Olympus E-3, a flagship camera from Olympus' digital SLR range. The camera has a 10.1 effective megapixel Live MOS sensor that gives you an amazing clarity. An added feature is flip-out, rotating 2.5" LCD display. It is pretty fast and can shoot 5 frames per second. However, as E-3 doesn't come with a lens, you'll need to buy one.
From the Nikon stables, there is Nikon D7000 to watch out for. With 16.2Megapixel DX-Format CMOS and a 3.0 inch LCD, it is worth giving a thought too.

For those who prefer to shoot with video, a whole new range of camcorders (both professional and consumer) is available in the market. Check out Canon’s VIXIA HF M32 that has Dual Flash Memory, 64GB internal flash drive, and an SD memory card slot in a compact, lightweight body. Its 3.89-megapixel full HD CMOS image sensor helps deliver high-definition video, while its 5.1-Channel Surround Sound ensures that the audio you record is equally impressive.

In professional category, the Canon XF305 Professional with 50Mbps MPEG-2 4:2:2 recording ensures excellent image quality and an efficient workflow. This is a nice buy for documentary producers and event videographers.

Browse through the Sony range too and have a look at its top-rated MiniDV HD Handycam Camcorder HDR-HC9, which has 3.2-megapixel ClearVid™ CMOS sensor, 6.1-megapixel still image capture, 10x optical zoom / 20x digital zoom, and a 2.7" touch panel.

In its high-definition video camera recorder range, check out the model HVR-Z5U. Its ingenious G Lens makes your shooting an interesting experience, thanks to high resolution, contrast, and color.
