8 Veterans Day Celebrations Across the US

Veterans Day is around the corner and thousands of people across the nation are gearing up for the string of parades and celebrations held to honor those who served in the military.

Here, we look at some of the notable Veterans Day celebrations taking place across the U.S. on or around November 11.

1. New York City Veterans Day Parade— Hailed as the largest event of its kind, the NYC Veterans Day Parade draws more than 25,000 participants. Activities kick off at 10 a.m. on Nov. 11 with a traditional opening ceremony next to Madison Square Park, which is followed by the massive parade, according to the parade's official website.

2. Auburn Veterans Day Parade — While this event is much smaller than the NYC Veterans Day Parade, Auburn, California, offers an exciting parade on Nov. 11, which begins at 10:50 a.m. at the corner of Lincoln Way and Cleveland Street, and proceeds to Central Square, where it will pause at 11 a.m. The first 500 veterans will be awarded a commemorative medal.

3. Birmingham's Veterans Day Parade— Birmingham, Alabama, has pulled out all the stops for its Veterans Day celebrations, which begin on Nov. 11 with a special luncheon and dinner, and culminate on Nov. 12 with a parade around Railroad Park.

4. Veterans Week in Branson— Throughout the week leading up to Veterans Day, Branson, Missouri, will host a variety of activities as part of its Veterans Homecoming Week, including special memorial services, luncheons, gala dinners, a tree lighting ceremony, and reunions for service members. 5. Denver Veterans Day Festival An official parade is earmarked to begin at 10 a.m. on Nov. 10 at Colfax and Bannock and end at Civic Center Park in Denver, Colorado. Thereafter, the Denver Veterans Day Festival will take place and will include fun family activities such as live music, military displays, and a variety of food. The following day a fun five kilometer and 10 kilometer race will take place at 8 a.m. in City Park

6. The Detroit Veterans Day Parade— Festivities for the Detroit Veterans Day Parade commence on Nov. 11 at 10 a.m. in Cass Park, in downtown Detroit. The parade itself draws thousands of participants but this year it will take place alongside a four-mile race through Woodward Venue. A family friendly festival will follow with live music, food, and exhibitions.

7. Hawaii Islands Veterans Day Parade— The Hawaii Island Community will be honoring military veterans on Nov. 10 at the 11th annual Hawaii Island Veterans Day Parade held in downtown Hilo at 8 a.m.

8. Houston Veteran Day Celebration— The annual “Houston Salutes American Heroes Veterans Day Celebration” celebration takes place this year on Nov. 11 at 10 a.m. An official Veterans Day Ceremony will begin at 10:45 a.m. with a 21-gun salute, followed by a moment of silence. The American Heroes Parade begins at 12:30 p.m. at Dallas and Bagby and will be followed by the U.S. Family Health Plan Health Fair surrounding the reflection pool in Hermann Square at City Hall.
