The diversity of rugged landscape and natural beauty makes Upstate New York a perfect travel destination for families looking for outdoor adventure on their staycation. With a rich history, the area also offers significant historical and education opportunities along with more modern entertainment attractions.

Here are six great places for families to visit in Upstate New York:

1. Adirondack Park: This more than six-million acre park in Upstate New York was created in 1892 and it contains seven different regions to visit. With 3,000 lakes and ponds as well as 30,000 miles of rivers and streams, the park is a kayakers dream. Hikers will appreciate the more than 2000 miles of trails that "wind along forested paths, skip along waterfalls, leading to summits with 360 degree views that extend as far as the eye can see." With plenty of five-star resorts in the area that offer their own recreation opportunities, the region is considered a prime vacation spot.

2. Boldt Castle:Millionaire hotel magnate George C. Bold began construction on this castle in 1900 as a labor of love for his wife. When she died just one month before the completion of what was to be their summer dream home, he abandoned construction, never returned and the castle was vacant for more than 70 years. Families can tour the impressively restored castle, which is located on Heart Island and accessible only by boat.

3. Howe Caverns: This cavern tour site is billed as "a fun affordable staycation" and an Upstate New York attraction not to be missed. There are traditional tours that wind "through limestone corridors, cavernous galleries, under massive boulders, to a subterranean riverbed carved over countless millennia." Other tours are more adventurous including a spelunking tour for those 12 and older, and a lantern tour. Outside cavern activities include a 900-foot long aerial zip line ride, a ropes course, and a rock-climbing wall.

4. Buffalo Niagara Heritage Village: Located in Amherst NY, this museum offers visitors a change to "travel back to a time when life moved at a gentler pace … when families shared work and played together … when the proud heritage of our region was just beginning." The historic village contains everything from a replica 1899 blacksmith shop to a 1938 log house and a school built in 1880. Special exhibits include 9/11 Remembered, and Tuning In and Reaching out: A story of Radio and TV, 1910-1959.

5. Lake Placid: Home to not one, but two Winter Olympics games, the small village of Lake Placid offers family vacation fun including dog sled rides, horseback riding, golfing, ice-skating, sledding, spas, salons, and fitness opportunities. Visitors can also tour the preserved Olympic Sports Complex and no matter the season experience a bobsled or luge ride.

6. Farmer's Museum: This rural life museum in Cooperstown, NY "provides visitors with a unique opportunity to experience 19th-century rural and village life firsthand through demonstrations and interpretive exhibits." It is a working farmstead with people participating in the typical activities of the time. Families who travel to the museum can participate in special events like the Candle Lit Evening, the Sugaring Off event that features historic maple-sugaring demonstrations and Things That Go Bump in the Night, a special event which "recounts the many mysteries and ghostly happenings that have occurred in the Museum’s historic village."
