The State of Maine is known as “vacation land” thanks to its scenic coastline, rugged mountains, and pristine lakes. Studying there is a dream-come-true for most students as the state prides itself on premier educational institutes, universities, and community colleges offering a plethora of undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral courses.
 
Students exploring the option of studying in colleges in Maine have some choices -- there are around 14 public universities and community colleges in the State and over 20 private institutions offer an impressive array of courses ranging from law, medicine, environment science, pharmacy, and arts to business.

The University of Southern Maine, Portland is a part of the University of Maine System (USM). It has been proclaimed as one among the “Best Northeastern Colleges,” in the Princeton Review’s 2007 listings. The university offers more than 70 areas of study in seven schools and colleges. It has more than 10,000 students at its campus in Portland and Gorham. The primary courses offered at the university are business, nursing, history, political science, economics, anthropology, geography, environmental sciences, and geosciences. 
 
The University of Maine at Augusta is a regional state university providing specialized baccalaureate and associate degrees in primary areas of mathematics, professional studies, and social sciences. The university has been ranked among the top public colleges by U.S. News and World Report for several years.
 
The Southern Maine Community College at South Portland sits on an 80-acre campus overlooking the beautiful Casco Bay. The college is equipped with state-of-the-art athletics facilities, soccer field, and a full-size gymnasium. Some of the academic programs offered include architecture and engineering designs, automotive technology, and business administration. It is currently accredited by the Commission on Technical and Career Institutions. Being a part of the community college partnership, students can enjoy the freedom of movement between institutions of higher education.
 
The University of New England offers various certificates, and undergraduate and postgraduate degrees. The University Of New England College Of Osteopathic Medicine is the only medical school under the University of New England. The university has campus in Biddeford and Portland with considerable student population.
 
Bowdoin College at Brunswick is a private liberal arts college, which has been featured in the list of top ten liberal arts colleges in the United States by U.S. News and World Report 2010. Bowdoin College offers a Bachelor of Arts degree and one can choose to major in one of the 40 departmental and interdisciplinary majors. About 1,750 students, national and international, study at this college.
