Types of Dogs: 8 Popular Medium-Sized Breeds

Choosing a type of dog for your family can depend on numerous factors, with traits ranging from temperament to activity level to size of the dog.

Medium-sized dogs, those ranging from 20 to 60 pounds, can be a good choice for families with children or for people who don’t have the room to house a big dog, but don’t want one of the little ones, either.

So if you’ve determined that you want a dog that won’t get beat up by your cat but won’t require a saddle, here are eight popular medium-sized dogs:

• Australian Shepherd – This smart dog has a high energy level and likes to herd. “Exceptionally easy to train, the only class the Aussie will fail is Naptime 101,” said DogChannel. “Apartment-dwellers would be brave to take on an Aussie, unless the family is planning on daily canine exercise excursions.”

• Bassett hounds – These easygoing dogs are sweet and, according to Good Housekeeping, have a “great sense of humor” but aren’t too intelligent. But who doesn’t love those floppy ears?

• Chinese Shar-Pei – These wrinkly dogs that may fall in the “so-ugly-they’re-cute” category are devoted to their families, Good Housekeeping said, calling them “regal and aloof” and explaining that they don’t “beg for attention.” They make great watchdogs.

• American Water Spaniel – This sporting dog will keep you on your toes with its love of water, hunting ability, and fun-loving ways. But be aware, if you choose this dog, he will need a lot of exercise, both physical and mental. “It is sensitive and willing to please. Some can be timid,” Animal Planet said. “Barking can be a definite problem; some also whine or drool.”

• Cardigan Welsh Corgi – This puppy has tons of energy, able to drive cattle all day, even with its low-to-the-ground build, Animal Planet said. He’s also easy-going and high-spirited, with really good manners (though he tends to bark).

• Chow Chow – This fluffy, bear-looking dog is what Good Housekeeping calls an “impressive breed.” “They tend to be reserved, even toward family, but are very loyal,” the magazine said. If they’re well-socialized, they’re great family dogs.

• Siberian Husky – Smart, responsive, and just all-around friendly, the Husky is a dog that needs outlets for its energy. Good Housekeeping called them “really stubborn,” too.

• Bulldogs – Dog trainer Cesar Millan puts these dogs on his Top 10 list of breeds for families. “The great advantage of bulldogs? They’re sturdy, so they can take anything that rambunctious kids throw at them, while they’re not very energetic. End result? A dog that will put up with a lot,” Millan wrote. “They’re also not picky about where they live, so both small apartments and large houses are fine.”
