Allergy sufferers face the dilemma of living without canine companionship or determining the types of dogs that won’t set off sneezing and watery eyes.

Luckily, there are numerous dog breeds that let allergy sufferers be greeted at the front door with wagging tails and joyful barks and no negative health consequences.

According to Everyday Health, it can be a little challenging to determine what dog won’t set off specific allergies because not all animals advertised as “hypoallergenic” really are. Keep in mind, the site said, that it’s usually not the dog’s hair that sets people off, but the dander on their skin. So just because a dog has little hair doesn’t mean it won’t cause problems for allergy sufferers.

In fact, Scientific American explored what makes a dog or cat hypoallergenic, and an expert told the magazine that there really are no hypoallergenic dogs. “Every person will have his or her own degree of reactivity to certain dogs — their saliva and proteins in their bodies,” SA said.

If someone in your household starts sneezing the minute they’re confronted with a dog, explore these breeds to find a one that won’t set off their allergies:

• Bichon Frise – This is an example of a fluffy dog that is considered hypoallergenic.

• Poodles – These friendly dogs, which come in standard, miniature, and toy sizes, are one of the most well-known hypoallergenic dogs. Breeds mixing with poodles, like labradoodles, a combination of Labrador retrievers and poodles, also may be less likely to challenge an allergy sufferer.

• Schnauzers – In miniature, standard, and giant sizes, the schnauzer is a friendly, medium-sized working dog.

• Spanish Water Dog – This energetic dog has natural protective instincts and likes to spend time with an active family.

• West Highland White Terrier (the Westie) – A friendly family dog, the Westie is easy to train and gets along great with kids. He does like to dig and bark, and needs training and strong leadership.

• Irish Water Spaniel – These larger dogs weigh in from 45 to 60 pounds, and their curly coats will need regular care.

• Maltese – These tiny dogs (4 to 6 pounds) have long, silky fur. Health.com said it can help to wipe them down daily with a warm cloth to remove allergens in their hair and on their skin.

• Shih Tzu – Animal Planet said this dog is “more closely related to the wolf than any other breeds,” and is one of the oldest breeds. These dogs, which when shown have elegantly long tresses, are considered hard to train.
