What Is a Tsunami?

Monday, 27 December 2010 10:30 AM EST

Tsunami is a Japanese word, which literally translates to “harbor wave.” There are many causes of tsunamis, namely earthquakes. Due to the tectonic movement of the earth, explosions creating enormous impact, which can be compared to that made by a meteorite, occur under water. These explosions cause high-rise waves that hit the shores and cause immense disaster to life and property.

The effects of a tsunami can be devastating. Loss of life and property occurs in large numbers, and it takes a long time to recover from the damage. The waves are so powerful that they pull in people and even huge vehicles deep into the waters. The effect of a tsunami is also felt on the coral reefs and other delicate organisms that grow under water.

The intensity of the effects of a tsunami can be gauged only during the reconstruction process. The aftermath is great, and the suffering even greater. A lot of economic relief is required to restart life and vegetation. Even the task of getting safe drinking water becomes a predicament for people in a tsunami affected area.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has been set up to send tsunami warnings throughout the world. Authentic tsunami information can be gathered from the center on a regular basis. This center endeavors to minimize the effects of tsunami as much as possible. For example, the center  sounded red alert on February 27, 2010, warning against the possibility of a tsunami in Hawaii. In an immediate response to the alert, an evacuation was quickly carried out. Although a tsunami did not hit the state, it still served as a good precaution.

Tsunami is a major natural disaster, which has caused much destruction to life and property across the world in the past. That is why governments across the globe have set tsunami alert stations for safety. They not only issue tsunami warnings but also provide information to the people living in the danger zone. Tsunami information includes information on the causes of tsunami as well as the harmful effects of tsunami. It also tells them what to do when a tsunami warning is sounded. This is the only way to fight the threat.
