Travelers to New York City will find something of interest for any personality, but nature lovers exploring the Big Apple may need to make specific plans and download travel tips to get their needed doses of the great outdoors.

Still, it is possible to stay in touch with Mother Nature even in the midst of some of the biggest skyscrapers in the world. Here are seven travel tips to consider if you want to see the green side of New York City:

Latest: What's Your Favorite Type of Vacation? Relaxing or Exploring?

1. Central Park: Explore 843 acres of nature tucked into the heart of Manhattan. Rent a bicycle for the day to cover more ground or explore on foot with a hike through the park. You can see a waterfall at The Loch, ice-skate in the winter, and, of course, take time to explore the Central Park Zoo.

The park’s website will alert you to special events and also allow you to map your exploration. Don’t forget to check out other parks in the city, too. Pelham Bay Park is even larger than Central Park.

2. Kayak in the City: Several companies offer the opportunity to rent a kayak and explore the city’s waterways. With 500 miles of coastline, you could spend several days on the water, enjoying both nature and the New York’s skyline.

3. Visit City Island: Just a short subway and bus ride from the Big Apple is a small island where you can rent a motorboat or just wander among seafood joints and spend the day outdoors, according to Concierge.com. The island even boasts an historical society and nautical museum that details the area’s shipbuilding history.

4. Day trips to hike, raft or rappel: The area surrounding New York City is full of beautiful scenery and numerous options for traditional outdoor activities. Companies like Discover Outdoors offer a variety of day trips for nature adventurers or families. Go ice climbing, take a winter horseback ride, or go skiing or on a snowshoe trek. One trip will even take you to a wolf preserve where you can observe those beautiful animals.

5. Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge: With more than 9,000 acres, this national park lets visitors observe wildlife, including more than 300 species of birds, and rangers will lead visitors on hikes and teach them about the area.

6. The New York Botanical Gardens: Fifty gardens are just the beginning of the botanical garden experience. Exhibits, tours and seasonal events will entertain nature lovers for hours.

7. The American Museum of Natural History: It may be indoors, but this museum is sure to inspire everyone who loves the outdoors. Visit the Hall of North American Forests and the Hall of Biodiversity, along with numerous special exhibits to learn about conservation, history, and the environment.
