Europe continues to grow as a coveted destination for travelers, but finding a good resort abroad can be tricky.

The global hotel market is expected to reach $550 billion this year, marking a $100-billion rise in revenue over the past five years, with Europe being a key region for the industry, Hospitality Net reported.

As summer vacation season approaches, travel writers are offering advice on how to find a good resort in Europe.

Among the first things to weigh is what services a resort offers and whether they appeal to you, Frommer's reported, noting that amenities such as unlimited alcohol or Broadway-style shows are only perks to those who will use those services.

Frommer's also encourages vacationers to seek advice from a travel agent.

"Travel agents are notoriously good at gaining upgrades, extra excursions, and discounts for their cruise customers." They also can help decipher room categories and other information and may have first-hand experience visiting the resorts under consideration, the travel guide noted.

Traveling off the beaten path can also offer vacationers exotic experiences and open up the resort options at a bargain, Travel + Leisure reported. Puglia, Italy, for example, offers travelers a unique experience with century-old olive groves at prices far below those of Venice or Florence.

Travelers also can find bargains by learning about the market they want to visit. For example, Berlin has more hotel beds than New York City, keeping prices low, according to Travel + Leisure. The city also offers a "Berlin Welcome Card," which provides public transportation and admission to more than 160 urban attractions.

Booking early may also provide bonuses and sales, as well as a better chance at securing a preferred resorts and dates, The Mirror noted, adding that travelers can find deals on websites such as Lastminute.com, Teletext Holidays, Monarch Airlines, On The Beach, and Low Cost Holidays.

Travel publications also are a great source of information, rankings, and reviews of resorts in Europe.

The top European resorts include Trump International Golf Links & Hotel in County Clare, Ireland, and Blue Palace Resort & Spa in Crete, Greece, Conde Nast Traveler reported in 2014.
