Side Effects of Tramadol

Friday, 14 January 2011 09:41 AM EST

Tramadol, a narcotic-like pain reliever, may be prescribed by doctors for moderate to severe pain. An extended-release version is offered when 24 hour treatment is required. Brand names include Ryzolt, Ultram, and Rybix ODT.

When taking Tramadol, you may experience a number of side effects. Common side effects often seen when taking this medication include drowsiness, weakness, and dizziness. Blurred vision may occur also. Due to these adverse effects, care must be taken when driving or operating machinery until you know how it affects you.

Gastrointestinal side effects include vomiting, loss of appetite, nausea, and constipation. Dry mouth has also been reported. Some describe a flushing of the face or body which may include a tingly feeling, redness, or warmth.

Insomnia is another side effect reported by patients. These side effects may go away over time, but should be reported to your doctor when you experience them.

Severe side effects require that you stop taking your medication and report them to the doctor immediately. These include agitation, hallucinations, or mood changes. If a fever develops or your heart rate increases, make sure your doctor is alerted right away. Overactive reflexes, fainting, or a loss of coordination are all signs that you need to be evaluated. The same is true if you have a seizure or convulsions.

Some patients develop a red skin rash that blisters or peels. Discontinue medication if you have shallow breathing or notice a weak pulse. Although the side effects may not be severe in your eyes, they are serious and require medical attention.

Any medication, include Tramadol, carries the risk of side effects which require immediate medical attention. If the patient has difficulty breathing, head straight to the emergency room or call 911. The same is true if the tongue, lips, face, or throat swell. Hives requires medical attention without delay.

More than 40% of patients report constipation and nausea during the first 90 days of treatment. Headaches, dizziness, and somnolence affect 25% of those taking the medication and 11% report pruritus. Each case is unique which is why Tramadol side effects must be discussed with a medical professional. Only they can determine the best course of treatment.
