Tim Keller Controversial Quotes: 8 Hot-Button Statements From Christian Evangelist

By    |   Wednesday, 20 May 2015 09:33 AM

Tim Keller has become a best-selling author and a nationally influential evangelist since founding the Redeemer Presbyterian Church in Manhattan in 1989 with his wife Kathy.
Some of Keller's comments and views on topics like creationism and same-sex relationships have drawn controversy.

Here are eight quotes from Keller on some of today's hot-button topics:

1. On addressing evolution in a report for the evolutionary group Biologos, titled "Creation, Evolution and Christian Laypeople," Keller writes, "There is no logical reason to preclude that God could have used evolution to predispose people to believe in God in general so that people would be able to consider true belief when they hear the Gospel preached."

2. "I believe in the historicity of Genesis 1-11 and Adam and Eve and I don't believe in the young Earth-creation or six, 24-hour day creation,” Keller said in an interview with Ed Stetzer on The Exchange, according to Christianity Today.

3. During Movement Day in 2013, Keller argued that movements must mature if they intend to continue to reach people, according to the Christian Post. "Movements at some point have to settle down with it, and they have to say ‘Unless we have some rules and unless we have some things that we're conserving, we're really not going to be reaching anybody …’"

4. Keller jumped into the controversy over pastor Mark Driscoll on Aug. 22, 2014 in The New York Times, saying, "…The brashness and the arrogance and the rudeness in personal relationships … was obvious to many from the earliest days, and he has definitely now disillusioned quite a lot of people."

5.New York magazine wrote that in one Sunday sermon Keller asked his attendees, "Why are you in New York? Deep down, you think something is wrong with you."

6. He frowned on pre-marital sex in a blog post on Redeemer City to City.com, titled "Christianity and Homosexuality: A Review of Books," in 2013. "God made sex to be a commitment-deepener … Therefore it is only for use inside marriage, where it is designed to operate as a way to constantly renew, remake and re-energize your covenant with love and joy so it does not grow old or cold."

7. Keller said in the same blog about same-sex relationships, "I would add that the Bible's prohibitions are not motivated by animosity toward people with same-sex attraction. Rather, they are there because homosexual practice doesn't fit with God’s wonderful purposeful design for sexuality in our lives."

8. Keller was criticized about his response to a question by NBC News correspondent Martin Bashir, during a 2011 interview. "People in other religions, unless they find Christ, I don't know any other way, but I also get information on a need-to-know basis. If there's some trapdoor, or something like that …"
