Early-stage thyroid cancer often goes undetected, but it is important to recognize these six thyroid cancer symptoms that can appear once the cancer has advanced.

1. A lump that can be seen or felt is a common symptom of thyroid cancer, says Endocrine Web. Even if you don’t notice the lump yourself, your physician will likely discover it when they perform an examination of the thyroid.

2. Swollen lymph nodes in the neck and throat could be a symptom of thyroid cancer if they are not due to other temporary illness. Cancer of the thyroid can spread to these lymph nodes and cause the swelling, but it is important to rule out other causes such as an infection.

3. While it is not a common way that thyroid cancer is diagnosed, changes in voice and excess hoarseness can be a symptom. Hoarseness can also be caused by thyroid nodules.

4. Another uncommon way thyroid cancer is sometimes detected is by difficulty breathing or eating. Because the thyroid sits near the trachea (windpipe) and the esophagus, a developing thyroid cancer can put pressure on those areas.

5. Neck or throat pain could be a symptom of thyroid cancer too, especially if it is persistent and occurs with any of these other symptoms.

6. Cancer.net also indicates that a cough that persists even when you are not sick or don’t have a cold could also indicate thyroid cancer.

Thyroid cancer isn’t common in the United States, says the Mayo Clinic. However, the rates are increasing and many health care practitioners believe it is only because advanced technology and better diagnostic tools are able to detect more thyroid cancers than in the past.

Women are at higher risk for thyroid cancer than men. Increased risk of developing thyroid cancer is also associated with with some genetic syndromes and high levels of radiation exposure. Fortunately, most thyroid cancers are easily treated and even cured.
