Best Swimwear For Plus Sizes

Wednesday, 29 December 2010 10:53 AM EST

If you're looking for the best swimwear for a plus size figure, it's important to note that regardless of what size you wear, there are certain styles of swimwear that best flatter each body shape. Because "plus size" is just a size, not a body shape, when choosing swimwear you need to figure out what type of shape your body is, and then look for plus size swimwear in styles that best flatter that shape.

Let's take a look at what styles of swimwear look the most flattering on each body shape, in a plus size.

Triangle
For plus size women with small shoulders and bust, and large waist and hips, swimwear styles that draw the eyes upward are an ideal choice. Choose pieces with bright colors and designs at the top, and dark, solid colors at the bottom. Also, choose swimwear with tops that accentuate features you like, such as halter tops, which draw attention to nice shoulders.

Inverted Triangle
If you have wide shoulders and a full bust line, and narrow waist and hips, you'll want to look for plus size pieces with wide straps and full bust support. Shirred styles help accentuate a narrow waste, while V-necks and surplices flatter the bust-line. Again, choose styles that flatter features you like.

Hourglass
An hourglass figure is well proportioned on top and bottom, and women with this body shape are lucky, in that they can choose any style, and it will look good on them. If you have this type of plus size shape, choose swimwear that enhances your best features. For example, if you want to draw attention to your slim waist, you might choose bandeau swimwear.

Circle
With full shoulders and hips, and a round waste, shirred and surplice styles in plus sizes do a nice job of creating a slimmer effect at the waist. As with those with triangle shaped bodies, those with circle shaped bodies should choose swimwear with bold patterns and colors on the top, and dark, solid colors on the bottom. Halters with plunging necklines are especially flattering, as are styles where the bright top and the solid bottom join at the waist with a belt or other cute design feature, to create a waistline.

Rectangle
When your proportions are equal from shoulders to hips, you'll want to choose plus size swimwear that accentuates your waistline. Belted waist swimwear is great for doing this, as are styles with diagonal stripes. Halters do a nice job of drawing attention to nice shoulders, and plunging necklines do a nice job of drawing attention to an attractive bust line.
