• A German shepherd became one of the miracle stories following Hurricane Katrina that devastated New Orleans in 2005. The dog was found in rubble 71 days after the natural disaster, according to the Mirror. Although emaciated, she rebounded after being nursed back to health, and found a new home in Ontario, Canada.

• A California wildfire forced Debi and Jeff Brusatori to flee their home. They took their cat, Ruthie Rosemary, with them in the car, but the cat jumped out as they were driving off during the evacuation. They couldn’t return home for five days, but miraculously heard meows coming from under their burned-out truck. There was Ruthie Rosemary with a few singed whiskers and eyebrows, but otherwise OK.

• After enduring a tornado in an apartment in Illinois in 2013, a 6-month-old pit bull named Dexter spent nine days hiding and surviving on snow and puddles. He was terrified when rescuers came upon him in his hiding place. The puppy came out when they offered him hot dogs and he was reunited with his owner, National Guardsman Jacob Montgomery.

• Following the same tornado, John Byler Dann and his family were thankful they survived in the basement. John had been unable to coax their dog Maggie into the safe place. Their home was flattened from the natural disaster and there was no sign of Maggie. They searched the wreckage of their house and heard barking. Digging through the rubble, they found the dog wrapped in carpeting. Although suffering from dehydration, shock, and a dislocated hip, Maggie wagged her tail when she saw Dann.

• A dog managed to survive for 77 hours on rain water after being covered by debris during a 2013 earthquake in Dingxi, China. Village rescuers working through the devastation realized a dog had been trapped and were able to free him. The dog, suffering only from an injured paw, was reunited with his owner.

• After a 2013 tornado in Moore, Oklahoma, that killed 24 people, a survivor giving an interview following the storm was shocked on live TV when her missing dog peeked out from under the rubble of her home. The news crew helped free the dog and it was reunited with its owner in a heartwarming survival story as the camera rolled.
