By    |   Friday, 14 September 2018 08:55 AM EDT

Being prepared for an emergency or natural disaster can go a long way in ensuring survival, which is why it is essential to have supplies on hand should you need them.

The American Red Cross recommends assembling an emergency preparedness kit that contains essential supplies that you can take with you incase the need to evacuate arises.

The question is, what items should you have on hand to ensure you are fully prepared for an emergency? Where do you even begin when assembling your survival kit?

A good place to start your survival prep is with these essential emergency items:

1. Water – The average person can only last about three of four days without water, Business Insider noted. Which is why having one gallon of water per person per day for at least three days for drinking and sanitation is vital.
