What Are the Best Sources of Aloe Vera?

Tuesday, 15 March 2011 05:12 PM EDT

Aloe Vera, an herbal medicine that has been used for centuries, is useful in the treatment of wounds and burns, minor skin infections, sebaceous cysts, and diabetes. The best sources of Aloe Vera are:

Aloe juice: Aloe Vera juice is essentially made from its gel. About two to four ounces of aloe vera juice, if taken twice a day, can boost your immune system. It acts as a detoxifying agent and helps in the purification of blood. Because of its anti-inflammatory properties, aloe vera juice is effective in reducing swelling and redness and offers sustainable pain relief. Drinking it can alleviate several gastro-intestinal problems. It heals ulcers, regulates bowel movements, and reduces the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome.

Aloe dietary supplements: This supplement may include a mixture of pure aloe juice, antioxidants, and other ingredients like ascorbic acid, citric acid, vitamin C, and sodium benzoate. These dietary supplements are useful for people suffering from indigestion and stomach problems that occur due to smoking cigarettes, drinking coffee, poor eating habits, and high stress.

Aloe gel: Aloe gel is a product obtained from processing the inner section of an aloe leaf without the skin. It is used mostly by pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and toiletry industries. The gel can be used on skin abrasions, cuts, sunburns, scalds, blisters, cold sores, rashes, and insect bites to avoid infection. Using the gel alone or with a skin cream helps soften and moisturize the skin. Aloe regenerates skin cells, reduces wrinkles, eczema, acne, sun and age spots, and other blemishes. Applying the gel to the scalp can help treat dandruff, seborrhea (dermatitis), psoriasis, and hair loss.

Aloe vera oil: Aloe Vera oil is made by combining parts of the aloe vera plant with oils like soybean, safflower, or almond. The oil can be used as carrier oil, which help essential oils penetrate the skin with other massage oils. It can be used in aromatherapy massages as it has relaxing and skin softening properties. The oil is also an ingredient in handmade soaps.
