5 Best Skirts for Work

Thursday, 20 January 2011 04:41 PM EST

Skirts can work very well for smart office wear. The key to looking good in skirts is finding the right type to suit your body shape. When selecting skirts for work, pick up skirts which appear appropriate and comfortable to perform various actions in like sitting down, bending over, picking things up, and reaching for overhead items.

Neutral and earthy colors like black, brown, cream/white or gray are appropriate for all-seasons and look great for interviews, meetings, semi-formal occasions, and most corporate events.

The five best Skirts for work are:

Pencil skirt
A Pencil skirt is the ultimate in chic for work wear. They look marvelous when combined with blouses and also look great as part of a suit. Pencil skirts are easy to accessorize and flatter most body types. A Metro style Striped Pencil Skirt worn with a Victorian style shirt can exude a classic-hip style and make for an ideal office outfit.

A-line skirt
With a slight flare resembling roughly the shape of the capital letter A, an A-line skirt fits at the waist and is slightly broader at the hem. The length of an A-line skirt is generally knee length or below, which makes it perfect for a work skirt. An A-line knee or ankle length skirt, which is tailored in casual fabrics and not too heavily detailed, will be great for the office.

Flared hem skirt
Comfortable and casual, the flared hem skirt is not as popular as the other styles of skirt described, but works beautifully for work. The flared hem skirt is a bit like a straight skirt, with a section at the bottom that flares out to the hem.

Straight skirt
Just as the name suggests, straight skirts are skirts that are the same width from the waist area to the hem. Straight skirts are ideal women’s skirts to wear at work as they suit most body shapes. Straight skirts come in varying lengths – ankle/mid-calf and knee, which makes them very easy and convenient to carry, especially at the office. Additionally, straight skirts have slits either at the back, sides, or front for ease of movement of the wearer.

Pleated skirt
A Pleated skirt is a perfect office separate, as it can be donned with endless possibilities like button-downs, cardigans, blouses, and shirts. Long pleated or semi-pleated skirts for work look as elegant and trendy as the other varieties. Multiple modern versions of pleated skirts are available nowadays, and are universally office-appropriate, look gorgeous with our without tights, and are quite flattering on the body as well.
