Lisinopril, a medication prescribed for the treatment of high blood pressure, acts as an ACE inhibitor. It works to relax blood vessels allowing the blood to flow more easily. Doctors also prescribe this drug to protect the kidneys of a diabetic.
When first using this medication, there are some side effects of lisinopril that one must be aware of. Many experience lightheadedness, headaches, fatigue and/or dizziness. Once the body adjusts to lisinopril, these effects will lessen in frequency. Another side effect commonly seen is dry cough. If these side effects continue for an extended period of time or worsen in severity, call your doctor immediately. Some experience vomiting and nausea in addition to the above symptoms and these should be mentioned to your medical practitioner also. Continue taking the medication even if these symptoms occur. Only stop if your doctor advises you to do so.
Serious side effects which require medical attention incude fainting and muscle weakness. If you develop signs of an infection, such as a fever or chills, your doctor should be contacted. A persistent sore throat is another side effect you must discuss with your doctor. If you notice a change in the amount of urine your body is producing, call your doctor right away. They must determine if this is a result of the medication or caused by another illness.
If you notice a yellowing of the eyes or skin, contact your doctor immediately. Lisinopril rarely causes serious liver problems, but this can occur which can be fatal if not treated immediately. If you experience severe pains in the stomach or abdominal area, be seen by a medical professional immediately. The same is true if you have persistent vomiting or nausea.
Very few patients suffer a severe allergic reaction, but for those that do, emergency medical care is required. Call 911 or head straight to the emergency room if you notice itching or swelling of the face, throat, or tongue. The same is true if you develop a rash or have difficulty breathing. Report severe dizziness right away as it can lead to a serious injury if you collapse as a result.
Although the side effects of lisinopril are limited to a small number of patients, awareness is key to proper treatment. Discuss any side effects you may experience with your doctor.
