Scottish Deerhound Wins Best In Show

Wednesday, 16 February 2011 09:03 AM EST

It’s official – the Scottish Deerhound Hickory has been named Best in Show at the Westminster Kennel Club dog show in New York City.

Five-year-old Hickory is the first Scottish Deerhound to win the title of Best in Show. More likely contenders for Best in Show, based on applause, were the bearded collie and Pekingese.

Judge Paolo Dondina, from Italy, named Hickory Best in Show late Tuesday. He praised the dog’s balance, beauty, and showmanship.

The Westminster Dog Show started in 1877 and has been going strong ever since. It has been televised since 1948, and is the second longest held U.S. sporting event (The Kentucky Derby is the first).
