1. “It’s time to turn the tide on our terrible statistics … The idea, as far as I’m concerned, it’s a sensible proposal to eliminate opportunity to continue domestic violence that escalates to death.”

-State Sen. Larry Martin, the Republican chair of the Judiciary Committee, spoke to the Charleston Post and Courier regarding South Carolina General Assembly bill S.3, which would restructure domestic violence laws in the state to bar those convicted of domestic violence or under restrictive orders from possessing firearms.

2. “Zero tolerance, I’ve learned since this incident with the dinosaur, has shut down all discussion of the Second Amendment in our schools. We are raising a generation of students who, when they leave high school, will know nothing about the Second Amendment … and will believe the gun itself is an evil instrument.”

-State Rep. Ala Clemmons, a Republican, said to U.S. News regarding “zero tolerance” policies in schools where kids are being suspended for referring to guns in schoolwork or making fake guns out of food items. Clemmons is touting a bill to require Second Amendment education in public schools.

3. “Every state helps the feds enforce their gun control in major ways. The federal government simply cannot enforce gun control in South Carolina without the help of South Carolina.”

-Scott Landreth, spokesman for the pro-gun Shall Not Campaign, remarked to Guns.com in response to legislation proposed by Republican Sen. Lee Bright that would block federal gun control laws in South Carolina.

4. “I know that that’s a card that’s going to be used.”

-Sen. Brad Hutto, a South Carolina Democrat, told The New York Times regarding proposed legislation to let people carry weapons on college campuses. Some proponents of the legislation say that arming college-age females can reduce instances of sexual assault.
