Retirement in New Hampshire is something to forward to. The state offers a mix of large cities and cozy small town that are both attractive and affordable.

When it comes to bragging rights, New Hampshire residents have plenty of them. The average household disposable income for New Hampshire is the highest in the nation and the median household income of $71,322 is also the highest in the nation, according to the Free State Project.

Here are some of the most affordable places to live in New Hampshire.

1. Manchester-Nashua
The Manchester-Nashua metro area ranks at No. 1 for New England states on the Forbes magazine's list of America's 100 cheapest places to live.

2. Portsmouth
Among the attributes of this city are a "progressive business climate, superior education systems, safe and comfortable residential neighborhoods, and a cosmopolitan atmosphere," according to the Greater Portsmouth Chamber of Commerce. The chamber pointed out that the city was listed among the "30 Best Markets to Find a Job" by MSN/CareerBuilder.com and ranked No. 5 on Outside magazine's list of the Top 20 Towns in America in 2008.

3. Enfield
Business Insider named Enfield as the state's most affordable small town, pointing out that it has a poverty level of 0 percent, and that 87.3 percent of the homes there are affordable.

4. Concord
As reported by MarketWatch, Concord is not only one of the most affordable cities in New Hampshire, but it is also one of the most beautiful. Unemployment in Concord is 4.3 percent, and the median home cost is $165,700.
