What Is Restylane?

Looking for nonsurgical facial rejuvenation? Restylane® may be the answer.
Restylane is made of biodegradable hyaluronic acid and is approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Restylane is the trade name for a family of products including Restylane®, Restylane-L, Perlane®, and Perlane-L. These products can be used individually to add volume and fullness to the skin. They can correct moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds such as the lines from your nose to the corners of your mouth. They also can be used for filling age-related facial hollows and "orbital troughs."
Juvederm® XC, another hyaluronic acid filler product, is manufactured using HYLACROSS™ technology for creating a smooth-consistency gel. It is infused with lidocaine to improve comfort during treatment. Juvederm® XC is the smooth gel filler that your doctor uses to instantly smooth away wrinkles around your mouth and nose.
Long-lasting effect: Restylane lip enhancement gives your lips a fresher, fuller look. A benefit is its long-lasting results, as the effects of Restylane lip enhancement treatments can last six months or more. Factors such as the patient’s age, skin type, etc. can and do have an effect on the duration that Restylane treatment results remain visible.
Precautions: In the U.S., Restylane is approved for cosmetic injection into subdermal facial tissues, but the safety and efficacy of this application of Restylane has not yet been established by the FDA. These products should not be used by people with bleeding disorders. Injections should only be given just under the skin. Restylane-L and Perlane-L should not be used by people with an allergy to lidocaine. However, those allergic to avian-based hyaluronic acid treatments can safely use Restylane lip enhancement, since it is derived from bacterial origins. Those with a history of allergy to bacterial protein should not use this product.
Side effects: Restylane side effects include headache, nausea, flu-like symptoms, redness, and pain at the injection site. Infrequently, patients experience muscle weakness as a side effect of Restylane. This usually  resolves itself within days, or in some cases, months after the procedure. After your treatment, you might have some swelling, redness, pain, bruising, and tenderness. These side effects will normally last for less than seven days. In rare circumstances, the doctor may inject into a blood vessel, which can damage the skin.
Avoid: If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, you should not use products from the Restylane family. If you are under 18, consult your doctor because this may not be a safe choice. Postpone the use of Restylane at the site of skin sores, pimples, and rashes until healing is complete. Wound healing may be delayed in such conditions or the Restylane side effects may be pronounced.
Time needed to perform the procedure: Restylane lip enhancement typically requires approximately 20 to 30 minutes to perform.
Affordability: As compared to more invasive cosmetic surgery procedures, Restylane injections are very affordable. The cost of each Restylane treatment is around $275.00 to $500.00, depending on the amount of volume and the area to be covered. Restylane cost varies since the number of targeted areas and their severity differ among patients.
Insurance: Some Restylane or Juvederm costs can be covered by insurance if the procedure relates to a medical necessity. You can ask your surgeon about filing for insurance. Purely cosmetic procedures are not covered by insurance. If the Restylane cost is too much to pay at once, ask your surgeon about monthly payments.
Restylane, because of its natural formula, does not require a skin test, unlike some other dermatological fillers and injectables.
