Long Distance Relationships

Monday, 27 December 2010 11:23 AM EST

There are bound to be ups and downs in love and relationships. You can always seek relationship advice from friends and family, but do use the advice prudently. Long distance relationships are very common as people travel to distant cities and towns to pursue their studies and careers. Long distance relationship can be successful, if you want them to and are willing to put in the work.

There are many couples who face relationship problems. Ignoring the problems and thinking they may disappear over time will not help. You need to find solutions to your relationship issues and sort them out. You can always make a long distance relationship work. Here are some tips to help you out.

Always interact with each other constantly. Both of you should be aware of the parameters of the relationship, ask necessary questions, and essentially be on the same page. Make it a point to do things together, whenever you can. Talking over the phone doesn’t necessarily do the trick. Something as simple as watching a movie at the same time or a TV series can be a fun bonding activity. Try and communicate everyday and make it more than once. It could even mean sending a text message or just a simple – “I miss you.”

Surprise your companion with small gifts like chocolates and flowers. Never try to control your partner, especially when you are in a long distance relationship. This will distance your partner and make him/her want to break free. Make a special attempt when it comes to pursuing something that your partner loves - it could be reading a book or watching a particular movie he/she loves.

Trust is the key to any relationship, so it is important to have faith in your partner and in your relationship. Keep ego and jealousy out of your relationship and it will help you iron out any differences of opinion. Discuss your future and try to meet as often as possible. Plan a vacation together and spend time doing some fun activities. This should help your long distance relationship blossom.
