Located in the Caribbean, Puerto Rico is an unincorporated territory of the United States that offers exotic travel opportunities for a staycation. The Travel Channel describes Puerto Rico as "a world away without leaving the States" and the location abounds with family resorts and hotels, many of which are provide kid's clubs and free meals for younger children.

Families traveling to Puerto Rico on a staycation should not miss these seven great places:

1. El Morro: This six-story military fortress, formally named the Castillo de San Felipe del Morro, is located in Old San Juan and was built between 1539 and 1589. According to U.S News and World Report, El Morro "is Puerto Rico's go-to tourist attraction, both for its extensive history and its outstanding vistas of the Atlantic Ocean. You can also walk through the fortress' depths, which include a maze of tunnels, barracks and prison cells."

2. El Yunque National Forest: This rain forest is located on the Eastern side of the Luquillo Mountains and "Only in El Yunque can you see the giant tree ferns and tropical birds such as the Puerto Rican Parrot. Only from El Yunque can you enjoy vistas of both the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea," reports the USDA Forest Service. The forest also offers extensive hiking trails, family friendly picnic facilities, some paved trails and convenient parking.

3. Flamenco Beach: This beautiful, white sandy beach in Culebra is a very popular staycation travel destination, features several guesthouses and even a campground. "If you are doing the day trips, you will find plenty of 'amenities'. There are several kiosks which rent the typical beach accessories; chairs, umbrellas, tents and other camping gear. Others sell food and drinks, including the perfectly tropical 'Piña Colada'."

4. EcoQuest Adventures: This adventures tour company provides guided adventures for families on vacation including "ziplining, rappelling, hiking, canopy bridges and 8x8 vehicles." EcoQuest consistently receives high reviews and seeks to "fulfill everyone's desire from an impressive ziplining experience crossing waterfalls in a rainforest to an exhilarating cave rappell in a subtropical forest only 5 minutes away from San Juan."

5. Ponce: This second largest city in Puerto Rico was founded by Juan Ponce de León's great-grandson. It is an important trading center and Playa de Ponce Port is one of the busiest ports in the Caribbean handling goods that include tobacco, coffee, rum, and sugar cane. Just one point of interest to families on vacation is the beautiful Plaza de las Delicias which is replete with fountains, a cathedral and plenty of benches on which to while away an afternoon. Parents Magazine reports, "A day trip to this colonial port city, with appealing churches, museums, and parks, is just right when you're ready for a break from the beach."

6. Isle de Vieques: In 2014, this island off the shores of Puerto Rico was voted as one of the Top Ten Islands in the Caribbean. It is easily accessible by air or ferry. It is also "one of the last destinations that truly remains like the Caribbean of the past; quiet, lush, uncrowded with unparalleled natural beauty. The island has the largest natural wildlife refuge in the Caribbean covering 3,100 acres of very green land."
