Christians believe Jesus fulfilled many prophecies about his death when he died on a cross and rose again.

Here are six Old Testament prophecies Christians believe were fulfilled by the death of Jesus.

Betrayal. The Old Testament includes Psalms that some interpret to foretell the betrayal of Jesus. Psalm 41:9 says: "Even my close friend, someone I trusted, one who shared my bread, has turned against me."

Many Christians point to Judas’ betrayal of Jesus as told in the New Testament as a fulfillment of that prophecy. "While he was still speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, arrived. With him was a large crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests and the elders of the people. Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: ‘The one I kiss is the man; arrest him. Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, ‘Greetings, Rabbi!’ and kissed him.” Matthew 26:47-49 NIV

30 pieces of silver. The Old Testament includes a passage that Christians interpret to foretell the price of the betrayal of Jesus. “I told them, ‘If you think it best, give me my pay; but if not, keep it.’ So they paid me thirty pieces of silver,” says Zechariah 11:12.

The New Testament tells of Judas’ agreement to betray Jesus. "Then one of the Twelve — the one called Judas Iscariot — went to the chief priests and asked, ‘What are you willing to give me if I deliver him over to you?’ So they counted out for him thirty pieces of silver.” Matthew 26:14-15

Pierced hands and feet. Psalm 22 in the Old Testament is interpreted to foretell Jesus being nailed to the cross. Verse 16 says, “Dogs surround me, a pack of villains encircles me; they pierce my hands and my feet.”

The New Testament tells of the crucifixion of Jesus. "After they had mocked him, they took off the robe and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him away to crucify him." Matthew 27:31 NIV

Clothes divided. Psalm 22 also is interpreted to foretell that Jesus’ clothes would be divided. “They divide my clothes among them and cast lots for my garment,” says Psalm 22:18.

The New Testament tells how the prophecy was fulfilled. "When the soldiers crucified Jesus, they took his clothes, dividing them into four shares, one for each of them, with the undergarment remaining. This garment was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom. ‘Let’s not tear it,’ they said to one another. ‘Let’s decide by lot who will get it.’ This happened that the scripture might be fulfilled that said, ‘They divided my clothes among them and cast lots for my garment.’” John 19:23-24

A rich man’s tomb. The Prophecy of the Suffering Servant in the Old Testament is said to refer to Jesus being buried in a rich man’s tomb. Isaiah 53:9 says, “He was assigned a grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death, though he had done no violence, nor was any deceit in his mouth.” Isaiah 53:9 NIV

The fulfillment of this prophecy is interpreted in the New Testament description of the burial of Jesus. “As evening approached, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who had himself become a disciple of Jesus. Going to Pilate, he asked for Jesus’ body, and Pilate ordered that it be given to him. Joseph took the body, wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, and placed it in his own new tomb that he had cut out of the rock.” Matthew 27:57-60

Raised from the dead. The psalms of David include references to the messiah being raised from the dead. "You, Lord, brought me up from the realm of the dead; you spared me from going down to the pit." Psalm 30:3

The New Testament tells of the resurrection of Jesus. “The angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay.” Matthew 28:5-6
