Probiotics Essential to a Flat Stomach?

By    |   Wednesday, 07 October 2015 02:57 PM EDT

Probiotics, or beneficial bacteria, may be one way to get rid of temporary bloating so that you feel better and achieve the flat stomach you've been wanting.

Although stomach bloating can be caused by medical problems like liver or heart disease, it often is caused by intestinal gas, Mayo Clinic endocrinology and obesity researcher Dr. Michael Jensen told WebMD.

More often than not, bloating is tied to the foods you eat, WebMD said. But if monitoring your foods doesn't help or if bloating becomes a frequent issue, it may be associated with other disease like irritable bowel syndrome, or IBS.

Intestinal gas tied to IBS has been shown in some studies to be alleviated by taking probiotics, according to LiveStrong. On the other hand, as is common with preliminary studies, some found no relief for symptoms like bloating that are associated with IBS.

A study on people with IBS that is diarrhea-predominant, meaning sufferers contend with frequent diarrhea, found taking a probiotic containing strains of Bifidobacterium, Lactobacillus and one strain of Streptococcus helped with bloating. Unfortunately, it didn't appear to help with other symptoms of the condition.

In a systematic review of multiple studies on probiotics and IBS, a study published in the BMC Gastroenterology journal found a "modest" improvement in IBS symptoms. Four of 14 studies looked at reported a statistically significant impact on bloating.

Keep in mind that taking probiotics can cause bloating, as well as symptoms of abdominal discomfort and gas, according to Everyday Health. But those problems usually go away after taking the good bacteria for a short amount of time.
