5 Probiotic Side Effects You Should Know

By    |   Wednesday, 18 May 2016 08:29 PM

Though most side effects from taking probiotics are mild, they do exist. The side effects from probiotics are usually minor and short-term for healthy people, but severe reactions may occur in those who are already ill or due to age-related circumstances.

Probiotics help improve the digestive system, strengthen immunity, and promote oral health. The "good bacteria" found in probiotic supplements and foods, such as yogurt and other fermented products, promise to balance the bacteria in the body for overall health.

Studies have provided possible links to health conditions by consuming probiotics, but further research is needed to better understand their effects, according to Berkeley Wellness at the University of California.

Here are five side effects you should know about before taking probiotics:

1. Mild gas and bloating are common short-term side effects. However, the effects may indicate overstimulation of the immune system or metabolic problems, according to Berkeley Wellness. Abdominal discomfort is usually temporary, but these side effects could occur more often in the very young or elderly, Everyday Health notes. Probiotic supplements might not be healthy for people who are already extremely ill. Some people who experience temporary symptoms might switch to another kind of probiotic that works better in their digestive system.

2. Infections have been occasionally reported in people with underlying health problems, including weakened immune systems, when taking probiotics, according to the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health. Critically ill patients, people who have undergone surgery, and sick infants are at risk for severe side effects.

3. Rash, hives, or itching could be severe side effects of probiotics if they persist or become bothersome, according to Drugs.com.

4. Difficulty breathing and tightness in the chest are other severe symptoms.

5. Dizziness could be a severe side effect from probiotics. Drugs.com advises seeking medical attention when experiencing severe symptoms.

Although probiotics offer some health benefits, the NCCIH says people should not postpone seeing a doctor about medical issues just because they are using probiotic foods or supplements.

Pregnant women, or those nursing a child, and people with health concerns should consult a doctor about taking probiotics.
