Are Probiotic Drinks Good for You?

Probiotic drinks are popping up everywhere, but are they just the latest hyped-up fad or are they truly beneficial?

Your body needs good bacteria for hundreds of different processes that keep it humming along from day to day, but many foods in the typical American diet may either kill off the body’s good bacteria or make bad bacteria grow too much and cause illness to occur, according to MedicineNet.

Probiotic drinks can be a good thing for your body, but may also be unnecessary or overdoing it, depending on what else is in your diet. These drinks, like kefir and kombucha, can be cold or hot and come in many forms from smoothies to teas.

If you aren’t eating or drinking other probiotic foods like yogurt, sauerkraut, naturally aged cheese, miso, pickles, and sourdough bread on a daily basis, probiotic drinks can provide a needed boost of good bacteria and may prevent digestive upsets as well as boost the immune system.

However, not all foods listed above are actually probiotics — to qualify as such, they need to contain at least 100 million live cultures per gram when they are made, according to Fitness magazine. Naturally fermented foods tend to have higher levels of probiotics, and many foods with adequate levels will be labeled as having “live and active cultures.”

For probiotic drinks, you can also look for CFUs (colony-forming units) to see the level of good bacteria you will be getting.

According to Berkeley Wellness, the benefits of probiotics can include better immune system function, weight loss, and better oral health in addition to improved digestive health.  

The FDA has not yet addressed health claims made by producers of probiotics, which means there are not yet recommended amounts people should get each day. Nutritionist and author of “The With or Without Meat Cookbook” Jackie Newgent suggests one serving per day of probiotics, which could mean foods or beverages.

Proponents of probiotics are emphatic about their benefits and suggest you will know if you’re getting too many by the way your digestive system functions. You can easily cut back if that happens, but in the meantime, your overall health will be improved by incorporating probiotic drinks in moderation on a daily basis, they say.

“I’d much rather see people drinking probiotic beverages than a soda!” Newgent told Fitness.
