How to Save Money on Road Trips

Monday, 03 January 2011 02:59 PM EST

The following are some ways to save money on road trips:

1. First of all, clearly identify your destination and the things that you plan to do. The best way to plan your trip is by making a calendar that lists what you want to do each day. When you are planning your road trip, do a bit of research over the net about the destination.

2. Have your route marked, preferably on a map. Also, have a local map handy, to help you identify the shortest route to each destination.save money road trips

3. Next, find out all the best, inexpensive hotels along the destination. You can also search for hosts, who are willing to provide accommodation for a night.

4. Another option for saving money is camping. The suitability of this option depends on the comfort of the group. The same goes for eateries. There are places where you can get good food at cheap rates. Knowledge about them is helpful. While on a road trip, carry a good quantity of snacks with you. They come in handy when you want to cover some extra miles before stopping for food.

5. Lastly, you need to take care of the entertainment for the group. You can also find out about the local festivals that might be hosted at the time of your travel and get passes/tickets from the net. The same can be done for the places of interest. That will save you some extra dollars. Having planned your days beforehand covers your sight-seeing, food, stay, and entertainment options.

6. While traveling, do not forget to carry your social security card, senior citizen card, or student card; they may help you save a few dollars. Also, some of the hotels and restaurants provide discount coupons. Collect them beforehand. Carry all that you might require like a few blankets, camping equipment, sleeping bags, and a spare tire. Make sure you buy minimal things on the road, especially snacks, as this increases your cost manifold.

Here are some more tips to save money on road trips:

· Collect annual passes to national parks. Get discount coupons for local motels and other attractions from the visitor centers.

·  Gas is a major expense and you can get some cheap gas from truck stops. Ask for the “Frequent Fueler Card” for big chains. Be easy on your car and drive it the fuel-efficient way.

· You can also call friends who live near your vacation destination, and ask to stay for a night or two.

Following these easy ideas will definitely help you save on road trips.
