A pet is kept at home for company, joy, and protection.

The following are the top five pets for protection:

1. The Bullmastiff
The Bullmastiff is a mixed breed dog, kept especially for protection. It uses its massive size to keep the intruder at bay, and its weight to throw him to the ground if he dares invade the premises. This surprisingly quick and agile dog does not require much training. Good temperament makes this dog an ideal family pet. It often stays home.

2. The German Shepherd
The German Shepherd, or “Alsatian” as it is called in the region in Europe it comes from, needs no introduction. It has long been a favorite family pet. Large, strong, and agile, the German Shepherd is a social animal. It is very easily trained for investigation purposes owing to its supreme intelligence and sniffing prowess. It is efficient in search and rescue operations and is often an excellent assistance to people with special needs.

3. The Rottweiler
The Rottweiler has a huge and powerful body. It has a reputation of being a very energetic dog. Running around, or chasing a ball keeps it alert and watchful. It also likes to swim. The dog is easily trainable. It will not let any stranger get anywhere near its territory.

4. The Doberman Pinscher
The Doberman has been trained to be the ultimate guard dog for protection for over a hundred years. Medium in size, it is an intelligent animal. Doberman Pinschers love human interaction and physical closeness; it slowly becomes a part of the family. It is determined and assertive, and has great strength, energy, and stamina. Regular exercise keeps it fit and obedient.

5. The Giant Schnauzer
Large and powerful, the Giant Schnauzer is a guard dog by nature. It protects the home and the family very well. Though it is not a popular dog in the U.S., it has the reputation of being an excellent police and military dog in many other countries.
