New York Gun Laws: Quotes From Heated Debate

By    |   Monday, 20 October 2014 02:53 PM

New York’s strict gun laws are often debated, and the SAFE Act, or the Secure Ammunition and Firearms Enforcement Act that passed in early 2013, is no exception. The New York State Rifle and Pistol Association challenged the law in court.

The following quotes reveal how people on each side of the debate feel about the issue.

• "[The SAFE Act] got everybody angry. People talk about it all the time," Jim Keneston, a New Scotland resident, told Newsday. "It's made honest citizens like myself and my neighbors criminals."

• After SAFE passed, the NYSRPA said on Facebook the state’s gun owners "should be ashamed and afraid of our state."

• "The enactment of the SAFE Act is, in my opinion, an example of the most pernicious form of tyranny, that which disguises itself as a benefactor to its victims," Robert Schulz, founder and chair of We the People of New York, said during recent debates about the SAFE Act, according to the Times Union.

• "Every piece of anti-gun legislation that has been passed since I have been involved in the Rifle & Pistol Association has been touted as being the piece of legislation that’s going to end gun violence in America,” Tom King, president of NYSRPA, told WAMC. “When is the media going to smarten up and when are the people going to smarten up and understand that we have to deal with the core issues, not what people are telling us are the issues.”

• On SAFE Act requirements that anyone owning an assault weapon register by April 15, 2014: "We don't encourage people to disobey the law, but we are hearing very much from people that they are not going to register at all or they are going to make modifications so it doesn't qualify as an assault weapon," Stephen Aldstadt, of the Shooters Committee on Political Education, told USA Today.

• "They can make all the noise they want, but the law is the law," Leah Gunn Barrett, executive director of New Yorkers Against Gun Violence, told USA Today. "The New York SAFE Act was passed by a bipartisan legislature, signed by Gov. Cuomo well over a year ago. It's being implemented, and people are expected to comply with the law."

• "Money cannot buy the hearts and minds of the American people when it comes to the Second Amendment," Andrew Arulanandam, spokesperson for the NRA, told The Washington Post. "Michael Bloomberg is just the latest incarnation of a long line of anti-freedom billionaires who’ve tried to take on the National Rifle Association."

• "They say, 'We don’t care. We’re going to go after you,'" former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg told The New York Times about the NRA. "'If you don’t vote with us we’re going to go after your kids and your grandkids and your great-grandkids. And we’re never going to stop.' We’ve got to make them afraid of us."

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo was quoted on Guns.com and by other media as saying that “extreme conservatives — right-to-life, pro-assault-weapon, anti-gay” have “no place in the state of New York, because that’s not who New Yorkers are.”

In response, Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino told the New York Post, “New York already leads the nation in chasing away its own citizens because of extraordinary high taxes, so does Cuomo really want to bully millions more away? New York’s greatness comes from accepting people of differing points of view. What Andrew Cuomo has revealed by these statements is his true self, because we see just how angry and radical his views are.”
