New Hampshire residents could have no trouble carrying around a handgun after recent constitutional carry legislation passed in the state legislature. This bill would allow gun owners to carry a handgun openly or concealed without requiring them to obtain a permit first.

ALERT: Should Obama Have More Control Over Guns? Vote Now

What if a New Hampshire resident travels to a neighboring state if the constitutional carry provision becomes law? If Vermont is the destination, they will find the gun laws there as welcoming as New Hampshire gun laws.

No other New England state has as many gun-friendly laws and government policies on the books. Despite being one of the most liberal states in the union, Vermont has an even higher rate of gun ownership than New Hampshire. A full 42 percent of Vermont residents own at least one gun, according to a survey in the Washington Post, while 30 percent of New Hampshire residents were gun owners.

Vermont does not require a permit to purchase or own a rifle, shotgun, or handgun. State residents can carry their firearms openly or concealed as long as the firearm in question is not carried with the intent or purpose to harm another person. This approach is the antithesis of strict gun control laws in many other eastern states.

New Hampshire concealed carry permits are recognized by Vermont. Although these permits will soon no longer be necessary, residents will still have the option of obtaining one if traveling to another state that does require gun permits.

Transporting loaded firearms is still off limits. New Hampshire makes it illegal to carry a loaded rifle or shotgun in or on any motor vehicle, powerboat or airplane. These firearms must be unloaded when carried by their owner while traveling.

The bottom line is if a New Hampshire resident wants to carry their favorite rifle on a hunting trip to the Green Mountains in Vermont, they are not going to face many obstacles in doing it. Vermont, like New Hampshire, is a haven for gun ownership.

Opposition will be limited in many other states as well. There are 22 other states that recognize New Hampshire gun licenses through reciprocity agreements with the Granite State.
